Gordon Library

DiMella Shaffer assisted WPI in realizing a multi-phase library renovation. The primary programmatic goal was the development of a large Information Commons at the library’s entrance level. Various library functions were relocated within the building in the multiple phases to open up this large space to support student collaboration. The library’s third floor special collections moved to the ground floor level, making way for the administrative and management offices. Overlooking the new Information Commons, the Technology Help Desk is supported by Desktop Support Services and the Call Center, all of which were relocated from the adjacent computer science building. This project reinforces the institute’s focus on team projects and collaborative learning. A small café lends a student center atmosphere to the open commons space. The success of this project can be measured by the 40% increase in student use of the library over the previous year.
