Akelius
DiMella Shaffer was selected to design the 8,800 square foot interior fit-out of the new Boston office space for Akelius, a Berlin-based real estate management company. The overarching goal was to achieve both LEED and WELL certifications. The intent was to create a sustainable, resilient, healthy space that enhances work life, while celebrating the 100-year-old building’s brick-and-beam structure and history.
The design is infused with the character that is inherent to Akelius spaces – light-filled and modern with soft colors found in the furnishings and artwork. Minimal modifications were made to the base building and sustainable goals were integrated through a process of reuse and selecting healthy materials that would complement the open, simplistic nature of the workspace. An open and transparent space gives a thoughtful nod to Akelius’ collaborative culture inspiring wellness and synergy. A 4,400 square foot multi-level roof terrace was designed with built-in planter trays and multiple seating options to accommodate working outdoors or a break from one’s desk while enjoying views of downtown Boston and the channel.
On-site stormwater management reduces stress on the City of Boston’s stormwater system contributing to a more resilient design. The site itself has no on-site parking and is in close proximity to the Boston Harborwalk – encouraging the use of public transportation, biking or walking thereby reducing carbon emissions.
The project is LEEDv4 ID+C Gold certified and is tracking towards WELLv2 Gold certification.
