Blakeley Hall

Tufts University

Originally built in 1926 as graduate housing, Blakeley Hall is being reimagined as a 29,000 GSF undergraduate residence that prioritizes building efficiency, inclusivity, accessibility, and high-performance systems. Expanding capacity from 85 to 120 beds, the renovation aligns with Tufts University’s decarbonization goals by incorporating whole-building energy improvements and long-term sustainable design strategies.

The modernization centers on creating a sense of community and inclusivity. Interconnected “neighborhoods” feature essential amenities like all-gender bathrooms, study spaces, and are linked through newly established internal circulation paths, transforming previously isolated areas into accessible, unified spaces. Social interaction is encouraged through floor lounges and communal areas, carefully located adjacent to the elevator and other high-traffic zones.

To enhance performance, the project includes flexible, future-ready mechanical systems, triple-glazed windows, and interior insulation, resulting in significant energy reduction and enhanced thermal comfort. These upgrades are complemented by increased daylight throughout the building, a secure single-entry system, and the transformation of underutilized garden level spaces into welcoming community areas opening onto a landscaped courtyard and terrace.

The ambitious renovation of Blakeley Hall renovation embodies a thoughtful balance of historic preservation with modern, inclusive design, creating a comfortable, vibrant, energy-efficient home for Tufts’ undergraduate students.
