Devlin Hall – COMPASS Laboratory
The renovation of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department at Boston College transformed an 1,800-square-foot office and lab space into a flexible, light filled environment supporting both faculty and student needs. Located in the heart of campus, the project prioritized optimizing the space to create an open, inclusive layout that maximizes natural light in the technology-driven lab for sedimentology and geomorphology research.
Designed to support three graduate students, a Principal Investigator, and a postdoctoral researcher, the damp lab is designed with adjustable furniture and equipment that can adapt to a variety of research activities and accommodate individuals with diverse mobility needs.
Natural materials like wood were used throughout to introduce warmth and texture, complementing the department’s focus on environmental studies and incorporating the college’s brand identity.
Despite unexpected structural challenges during demolition, the renovation achieved a thoughtful balance of functionality and aesthetics resulting in a welcoming, collaborative space that will serve the department’s evolving needs for years to come.
